A how-to, for the curious, September 25, 2006 By Sheehan Moore (Fredericton, NB Canada)
"I got my Bialetti Moka Express Stovetop Espresso Makers 6-cup about a week and a half ago. It took me a while to learn all the tricks of the trade, so I thought I'd piece it together here.
1. Rinse out the pot, preferably with warm water and not with any abrasive cloth.
2. Fill the bottom of the pot with water to the line. If you go over it, the pot might explode. Seriously.
3. Fill the middle filter with ground espresso roast (dark) beans. Grind them a little bit finer then auto drip grind, to about the grain of fine sand. Level off the filter, and put it in the pot.
4. Screw on the top hard. Don't use the handle to screw it, because it could snap off.
5. My stove goes LO, 1, 2, ... 8, 9, HI; I usually set it between 3 and 5. It takes 5-ish minutes to finish. Take it off the stove when you hear it gurgling and sputtering.
Things I've learned:
*If it's going to be mainly you drinking the espresso, consider a 3-cup. I usually make a double cappuccino in the morning, and the rest of my family uses no more than 3 shots total. I stick the left-over in a Tupperware container and refrigerate it (a practice sure to make Italians shudder) to mix with milk and sugar when I come home from work.
*You can open the top to watch the espresso come out, because it is really cool. Just be sure to close it before it starts sputtering, because it goes all over.
*Read an article in a magazine or something while you wait--just don't wander off, because the time between when it first comes out and when it's finished is brief.
Moka pots make great 'espresso,' plus they're cheap and quick. From what I've gathered, Bialetti's the best maker. So I definitely recommend this, Bialetti Moka Express Stovetop Espresso Makers. "

"Title says it all. If you're being scared away by the negative reviews, they are there because the owners did not know how to use/operate this Bialetti Moka Express Stovetop Espresso Makers. (Admittedly, it is some effort and the instructions that come with it are not the best...) Here are some tips to keep you from going wrong:
- Rinse the machine, and make two cups before using it for real and toss them. This goes for any coffee maker.
- Never get coffee/grounds in the bottom half or on the threads. Fill the brew cup AWAY from the device, level & clean the edge, and then drop it in. I use a round paper filter in the bottom in addition, as this makes cleanup easier. If you get coffee in the bottom, the taste will be off and the bottom will corrode. If you get coffee in the threads, it will be very difficult to open.
- Do not overfill with water, there is a line there for a reason - do it twice if you want more.
- Do not the the water boil out! When it gurgles, IT IS DONE, take it off heat immediately and serve.
- Clean it immediately after serving. I run cold water on it to cool it off, then wash everything with water ONLY, and dry by hand with a paper towel. If you let the coffee/water sit, or do not dry it properly, it will corrode. If you use any sort of soap you will ruin it.
- Don't use espresso or finer ground coffee. It's not made for espresso, and you'll get too much coffee dust in the brew cup / pipe, and the taste will be off next time. Cheap consumer burr grinders set on 2 or 3 will do it perfectly.
If you take good care of this pot by cleaning it and drying it immediately every time, this pot will last years and provide better quality Italian style black coffee than any drip maker can. It is inexpensive, fun, and delicious - definitely try it if you haven't before. "

it works, February 1, 2005 By Kari Roe
"This works amazingly well. We've used Aerolatte 5 Milk Frother, Satin Finish for a poor-man's latte by microwaving milk, then frothing it to simulate steamed milk, then mixing it with various coffees. We've also used it to froth hot chocolate. Doesn't work that well for making whipped cream."
The best idea ever!, June 19, 2011 By elanc22
"Its like drinking cappuccinos from starbucks, but at home! I totally recommend Aerolatte 5 Milk Frother, Satin Finish. Without the mess of a milk steamer, this little frother creates coffee shop-like drinks in minutes. If you are looking to have yummy drinks, but don't have the money for a cappuccino maker, this is for you!, Aerolatte 5 Milk Frother, Satin Finish"

Follow these tips for a unique coffee, February 3, 2007
By T. Speidel (Canada)
"Every family in Italy owns one of these coffee makers. Here are a few tips:
1. In Italy this is NOT called an espresso machine, but a Moka machine. An espresso is what you would drink in bar made with a steam or high pressure machine with the crema on top.
2. Smaller size Moka machine tend to make better coffee.
3. Never wash the Moka with detergents, just rinse it under tap water
4. You've gotta use it often for a good coffee.
5. If you haven't use it in a while, make a weak coffee ("lungo") and discard
6. DO NOT put the MOka in the dishwasher.
7. Use drinking water. Avoid tap water especially if very chlorinated
8. Never compress the coffee.
9. For a strong coffee fill the filter with ground coffee and make a small cupola that slightly protrudes beyond the rim. Do not press down.
10. For best coffee, heat at very low heat. It's ok if it takes 10min.
11. As soon as coffee reaches the top, remove from heat
12. Do not let the coffee boil
13. Use good quality coffee, not too strong, medium grind (try Illy for a good commercial brand)
14. Sip while still hot, enjoy! "

Break it in first 10-15 pots+, June 26, 2011
By shotokun16
"I rarely write reviews and this probably my second or third review on a Amazon . However, i purchased my Bialetti 6-cup Moka express at Bath & Beyond

I sure do love Italian clothing, cars, women, life-style, food, and the Bialetti Moka Express! This monumental 1933 Italian stove-top espresso design is still one of the best machines out there. Considering the price and its low-maintenance (i.e. replace that little plastic ring after 1-2 years) characteristics, i think this machine will last you forever with quality espresso. After 10-15 pots later i think this espresso tastes similar or even better than those $500-700 espresso machines that you see at commercial or boutique cafes. Why 10-15? i honestly cant tell you. If you use the same beans over time i think the bialetti starts building a cake and the flavors start maturing into fine wine.(IMHO)
I would like to give you guys some tips in making quality coffee with this timeless devic

My method:
* About 80% of the time, i purchase my whole beans from Whole Foods (e.g. Espresso kind) and I usually pay attention to its roasting date. Try to get your beans either on its roasted day or within the 2-4 day mark. Store your beans in a tight mason jar where light & air cannot seep through. STAY AWAY FROM STARBUCKS or other non-organic grocery stores
* Always grind your own coffee. I grind my coffee around second to the third last level in fine. [My 5-month grinder and going strongCuisinart DBM-8 Supreme Grind Automatic Burr Mill (CCM-16PC1) I wouldnt recommend this grinder for high end espresso machines just for french pressing and bialetti moka express
* While grinding your beans fill your bialetti to the the indicator line with cold, fresh, and filtered water
* Turn on your stove around medium to medium-low
* Fill your moka express to the top (where you can see grounds falling off from the side; try not to over-tamp it will just take a little bit longer for the espresso to come out) and brew her. (Set your timer around 5:45 to 6minutes. After numerous pots on my electric stove i think 5:45-6minutes is a good indicator in checking up your bialetti. Remember this isnt a tea kettle so stay close so you can hear the low rumbling pitch)
* When the noise starts screeching and stops its time to pour.

Optional:
* I add 1-tsp of Organic Vanilla Syrup
* Raw Organic Brown Sugar Cane
* Heavy whip cream (not recommended for the calorie cautious)
* And a dash of raw Cocoa (Organic Cocoa)

Stir and enjoy!
When a coffee takes 8-10 minutes to make by hand you know its gourmet and going to taste amazing. Enjoy!
NOTE: Only clean it with hot water refrain from any heavy detergent applications. I sometimes use a mild soup mix after 1-2months with hot water. Treat your Bialetti with respect and kindness and she will paint you the world after every sip. "

Finally, no carafe, October 28, 2006 By G. Boggs "another critic" (Memphis, TN)
"My bride and that i have owned in all probability a half-dozen or therefore coffeemakers throughout out 15-year wedding. we have a tendency to each love coffee within the morning, and that we prefer to have it piping hot and prepared after we rise. We've had some superb coffeemakers and owned a spread of brands and models. however all however 2 had one major Achilles' heel - a glass carafe. but onerous we'd strive, those glass carafes perpetually got broken. And once they got broken, the unanimous refrain from stores and makers was: "Sorry, we do not provide that version anymore." So, it absolutely was a replacement coffeemaker or nothing.

We conjointly owned one among those fancy units with an insulated carafe. Well, a minimum of for the unit we have a tendency to bought, that cuts 2 ways that. Yes, the coffee within is insulated from the frigid winds of our kitchen. it's conjointly effectively insulated from a hotter (which the unit failed to have or, obviously, need). currently I will tell you that, with the attainable exception of the foremost secret analysis bowels of NASA, there's no insulated carafe within the universe that's as effective as a hotter unless one consumes one's coffee terribly quickly.
Not solely will this unit create nice coffee, there's no carafe to break!! Or wash!! many thanks, thank you, many thanks Hamilton Beach. We love it.
One caveat: when the user's manual tells you to frequently descale the unit, do so. Else the machine can get sulky and easily refuse to brew your coffee. It's in all probability unionized, who knows, however it will effectively sit down on the work. currently the manual has been fine tuned by an attorney and recommends descaling monthly. Given the degree of dissolved mineral in our water, we have a tendency to descale once each six months and every one is okay.

I love this coffee maker, June 27, 2011 By Rook
I just started drinking coffee again and this coffee maker is very easy to use. No carafe to break. I can make 12 cups of my favorite brew.

I will say this..it did have a plastic taste at first but it is gone now. I recommend this coffee maker.
